My name is Gene Wheeler I am a photo based new media artist and educator. My
work incorporates paint, collage, mixed media, photographic imagery, video, and
installation techniques. The things that I have an interest in make their way
into the work through osmosis subconscious means or through direct connection
and representation.
Through my interests in art and poetry, nature, science,
history and philosophy, I creatively and critically investigate my world.
What interested me in creating new projects is how photography functions as a
tool or bridge, to bring my subjects and myself together so we can create a new
and authentic shared experience. Regardless of the potential outcome of a
visible record of the photographic experience, the physical act of taking
pictures has been a valuable foundation for erecting the framework for a
meaningful relationship with the world I explore.
I was taught by my grandmother, how to draw and paint when I was seven. We made
art every day that summer visit. I knew from that moment I wanted to be an
artist and storyteller.
My work examines the notions of the collective memory, identity, spirituality,
fragility, and loss.
I received a Master of Fine Art in Photography, Video and Related Media from
the School of Visual Arts in New York City. I have a national exhibition record
and have been exhibiting my Fine Art photography, installations, and video work
for over twenty years.
I have been teaching at the University level for the past fifteen years.
I have over thirty years experience producing commercial and fine art
commissions.
I currently make my home in Denver with my wife Robin and our “mush faces” Cash
and June.
